Really? Well I want to be able to show clients my images as they come and be able to check things on a larger display than the back of the camera. Why is it so important to you to shoot tethered? Reading your post one could think that you didn't do so until now and you were doing just fine, did some of your clients specifically ask for tethered shooting? Why do you even have the client in the same room? If they use more power than regular SD cards then yes, it may short out the camera in the long run since it wasn't made to use that much power I should think. I don't think the cameras were made to have "WIFI SD Cards" inserted. But with decent tablets well under $200 they might make a great remote display for sharing. As another poster indicated the new EyeFi Mobi card might be 'tablet' only. It could be possible, but was never my main goal. So if I understand you correctly the PQI does not allow me to just put a laptop/iPad in front of my client where the images progressively pop up while I am shooting in the room next door?Īctually, I am not fully qualified to answer that.

My Nexus 7 has an unpowered USB port so it can not manage to see the EyeFi card memory structure due to the overhead draw of the radio. Some readers on low powered tablets seem to balk at the EyeFi since the radio drains some current. That said having the ability on the PQI to use any microSD card means I can use it in a non-WiFi mode as a regular memory card and transfer the images to a non-WiFi system easily via the microSD. The PQI requires me to connect to it and 'request' specific photos be sent. They are very different and for just casual send every photo to my tablet, the EyeFi wins. I don't believe that the new EyeFi Mobi cards need an account to function at all.

The PQI seems very interesting as you can upgrade the memory and card class (Couldn't find much info though!) but the manual says that when using a browser with the card you need to connect to 192.168.1.1 is that the IP address for their servers or for the card? Is the software for the interface hosted on the card itself or on their servers?ġ92.168.1.1 is a standard address on the local network being generated by the card.

However, the Eye-Fi Mobi doesn't require any connection to their servers, but I don't think there is software for it for laptops, just iOS and Android mobile devices. Note that after having an Eye-Fi for a few years, I left them, they didn't leave me. This part of the industry isn't fully mature yet, so worrying about long term use of a particular product isn't very productive. By the time Eye-Fi goes out of business, you won't care because you will be using something else. Ideally I want a solution that will work on tablets and laptops and that will never rely on the manufacturer's servers (long term operability).

Just suggesting an alternative based on your requirements that has been well reviewed.įollowing your post I just looked at the ShutterSnitch website and they mentioned a couple of other solutions such as the Transcend Wifi, the Toshiba FlashAir and the PQI Air.

I have an Eye-Fi Pro that I no longer use because I now have a Canon 6D. Look into the Transcend WiFi card + ShutterSnitch running on an iPad.ĭoes the Transcend work for laptop tethering? Looking at the different options for wireless tethering I saw two names pop up more than any others: Cam Ranger (Not for me as I don't want a thing that I have to plug into the camera that dangles about and that I have to recharge) and the EyeFi (Not my thing either as you apparently have to make an EyeFi account before you can change settings or anything like that) but I don't want to have to make an account to use my WiFi SD card so I am looking for something else, a solution that does not rely on external servers in any way (Who knows, services could shut down in a few years!).Ĭan anyone recommend a good alternative? Thanks!

Since the D800 has dual card slots I was going to send my RAW images to the CF card and send (Small?Medium?Large?) JPEGs to a WiFi SD card. I was looking into some solutions for wireless tethering as I just hate cables, my strobes are already triggered by Pocket Wizards and I was looking for a way to show the client/model the images as they come out of my D800 either on a laptop or iPad/Tablet.
